Policy and trends of Complementary Medicine, Herbal Products and Medical Cannabis in Thailand: A case study

In this seminar, the policy alignment of the country will be explained how we work on Complementary
Medicine services, Herbal Products and Medical Cannabis in Thailand from the national level. The national herbal
policy was first initiated in year 2016. The first national herbal committee (Our Prime Minister is a chairperson) has
been functioning since 2017 with new regulations, Herbal Products Act, launched in year 2019. The entire value
chain of herbal/traditional products were reconstructed. Cannabis is also one of 15 herbal champions according to
the national Herbal Action Plan B.E.2566-2570 (2023-2027). In fact, Ganja (Marihuana) has been used in Thai
Traditional Medicine (TTM) for more than 300 years as it was found in the classical textbooks/ historical evidences. In
Thailand, Cannabis was delisted from schedule 5 narcotics except for extracts with > 0.2% by weight of THC on 9th
June, 2022.
TTM has been officially practiced in Thailand since year 1999 as stated in Practice of the Art of Healing Act B.E. 2542
(1999), which later in year 2013, the Thai Traditional Medical Professions Act B.E. 2556 (2013) has been launched.
While another 2 alternative medicine which legal practice in Thailand are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and
Chiropractic. Recently, TTM and TCM are include in Thai National Health Care Coverage.
According to the international data, Thailand's wellness economy found growth potentially. The Global Wellness
Institute said the global wellness industry from 2023-25 is expected to grow at an average rate of 7.5% per year,
with a total value of up to US$6.99 trillion by 2025. Therefore, the government has given an important to support
medical and wellness tourism in Thailand. The Thai government initiated a policy to support the country as a "wellness
economic corridor of the region". TTM and Thai herbal products have a uniqueness with distinctive features in each
area will help strengthen our wellness industry and create lot of opportunity for the local entrepreneurs.
강사소개
Dr. Monthaka Teerachaisakul was graduated in Bachelor of Pharmaceutical
Sciences or B. Pharm, major in botany, in 1999 and Ph. D in Public Health Sciences, major
in Thai traditional and alternative medicine, from Chulalongkorn University with an honor award of outstanding Ph D
graduated in year 2012. She has been extensively conducting the clinical research in Traditional and herbal medicine.
Recently, she has more than 40 publications in book, research article and conference proceeding. In 2022, she has
been approved for the Board Certified of Herbal Pharmacy (BCHP) from the College of Herbal Pharmacy of Thailand
(C.H.P.T).
