Acupuncture is safe, especially when administered by skilled practitioners in appropriate settings. Large
scale prospective studies have shown that the majority of adverse events (AEs) from acupuncture are minor, such as
spontaneous bleeding, bruising, or pain at the treatment site, and life-threatening AEs are rare. However, there are
ongoing case reports describing serious AEs related to acupuncture, including pneumothorax, ocular perforation, and
even death. A concern with such case reports is that they often inappropriately suggest detailed information regarding
the dangerous elements of acupuncture, potentially exaggerating its risks, while failing to achieve their educational
purpose of preventing similar future incidents. This presentation will examine cases from papers describing AEs of
acupuncture and discuss how to ensure that case reports fulfill their primary educational objectives.
